Music you own · Mac + iPhone

A player for your music

Fonkey (Funky + Monkey obviously) is a Mac music player for the files on your disk. Bring your old iTunes library over, keep your playlists and ratings, find missing metadata, and put a record on. There's no account to make and no cloud to fall out of.

The stuff a music player should do

Import, sort, rate, fix, play. The boring parts, done properly, with your files left exactly where they are.

Bring your iTunes library with you

Import the whole iTunes Library XML: playlists, folders, ratings, play counts, loved tracks, comments. A path remapper sorts out the moved-drive problem. You can export back out again, too.

A table that can take it

Sortable columns you choose, inline editing, search and Finder-style type-ahead. Built to hold two hundred thousand tracks without complaint.

Ratings with more room

Seven stars in half steps, a loved flag and an explicit flag. Tell shuffle to skip the explicit ones when tender ears are around.

Playlists, folders, smart playlists

Drag and drop, folders for the folders, live smart playlists. Each playlist remembers how you last sorted it.

A 10-band EQ and crossfade

Seven presets plus a curve you drag into shape yourself. Crossfade from zero to six seconds when a track ends on its own.

Edits that go into the file

Fix a title, an album, a year, the artwork or the lyrics, for one track or a hundred at once. Fonkey writes it into the tags, so any other player sees the fix too.

Find missing metadata

Groups the albums with gaps and asks MusicBrainz, and optionally an AI with your own API key, to fill in genre, year and artwork. You review every suggestion before anything is written.

More than one library

Keep the kids' library apart from yours and open each in its own window or tab. Media keys, Now Playing and a menu-bar mini player all work.

Twenty-four ways to Fonkey and chill

Full-window backgrounds drawn from the album's own colors. Turn on React to Music and they move with it. Or pick Random and let it surprise you.

Your library, on your phone.

Start a server on the Mac to serve your library on a colorful platter to your phone. Stream anything, or download albums, playlists and artists to keep for the train. Fonkey is the number one reason to get a 2 TB iPhone duo.

  • Lock screen and Control Center controls
  • Home shelves: Recently Played, Suggested Albums, Most Played Artists
  • Search, playlists, ratings and favorites
  • Downloads for offline listening
  • Full-screen visualizers
  • Audiobook mode: books play at 0.5× to 6× and the narrator keeps their normal voice. Albums tagged Audiobook or Spoken Word get marked for you, and music always plays at 1×
  • Keep the Beat: an optional metronome ticking under the book, 30 to 240 BPM
  • Help built in, under Settings and in the player drawers
  • English and Brazilian Portuguese with more language support coming soon

Local network only. Your library never goes on the internet, and there's not a way to reach it from outside your house yet, but you can download your entire library (you may have to delete all those annoying live photos)

Put a record on. Or a tape.

Fonkey has two alternate views for when you're feeling nostalgic or just sassy. The Mac's got turntable. The phone a cassette deck. Turn on Group by Album and shuffle deals out whole albums in disc order, one record or one tape per album.

A flat, top-down record player

They say it sounds better on vinyl. Feel free to rip your collection to FLAC and put it on the big screen. Grab a beanbag chair, have a listen, and argue about it with your buddy Tom.

  • Tonearm drag-to-seek
  • Sixteen pressings colored from the artwork
  • Record-shelf queue, fader and rocker controls
  • ⌘K flips between Library, Turntable and Visualizer

What it doesn't do

Printed here so you can hold us to it.

No cloud

Nothing is uploaded anywhere. Your library is a file on your Mac and it stays there.

No sign-up

You don't need an account to use Fonkey but you can use accounts to share your library with your phone and anyone on your network.

No catalog

It plays the files you already have. That also means there's no store and no streaming service hiding inside it.

Not out yet... gulp

The Mac app is in beta. The iPhone app is in development and CarPlay comes later. Leave your email and we'll tell you when.

Get Fonkey before anyone else

One email when something ships. That's it. No newsletter, no "content", nothing weekly. If we are lucky you will get 4 emails: App. Server. iPhone. CarPlay.

We won't sell/share your email because spam sucks.
